10 Best Homework Tips for Busy & Fed-up Families

May 12th, 2009

Angela Norton Tyler asked:

Homework is my thing. I give homework presentations, workshops and seminars for parents and teachers; I talk to students about homework; I answer parents’ emails concerning homework; I deal with my own children’s homework. I have even created an entire homework site for families with pages and pages of homework tips, ideas, suggestions and advice!

I know from homework.

But, sometimes families don’t have time for all of my homework knowledge; they want the quick-and-dirty, condensed version! So, if you are fed-up with homework and short on time, the following list is for you.

10 Best Homework Tips for Fed-Up Families

1. Make a list of your family’s major homework issues/ problems. Does homework take too much time? Do your kids have trouble getting started, keeping track of assignments, turning it all in? Are you tired of feeling as though it is your homework? Write down whatever is bothering you. You cannot solve a problem until you know exactly what it is.

Share the list with your kids. You might say, “I’ve been thinking about how every night we fight about homework. Here’s the list of what really makes me crazy. I’d like to have some enjoyable evenings, wouldn’t you? What do you think is causing all of the problems?” Listen to what your kids say! They are truly the ones suffering!

2. Address the problems and solutions you and your child discussed in a Homework Contract. This doesn’t have to be anything fancy, just be sure to include answers to any on-going homework. For example, if your child has trouble getting started on homework, one of the items on the homework contract might be

Mike will start his homework by 4 pm every day.

Please keep your Homework Contract simple: no more than four or five Homework Rules.

3. Give your kids an incentive. No, I do not think children should get paid to do their homework! However, if your family has been fighting the Battle Royale every night, and now it’s an episode of Little House on the Prairie- let’s recognize and reward! Give your children short and long-term incentives for doing their homework quickly and independently. And, no, I’m not talking about an expensive, fancy reward system. It could be as simple as

Mike can watch TV if he finishes his homework by dinner.

or

Michaela can choose Saturday night’s restaurant if she does her homework all week without being reminded.

Did you know that when you sandwich homework between two fun activities, it’s called a Homework Sandwich? Check out more homework sandwich ideas…

4. Make a Magic Homework Box. This is a box filled with your child’s daily homework supplies and materials. At homework time, the box comes out, and it’s time to boogie! No more “I-can’t-find-a-pencil” or “Where-is-my-ruler?” excuses. When homework is finished, everything goes back into the Magic Homework Box- ready for tomorrow.

5. Get some homework organization. You know how you good you feel when you clean out a closet or a drawer full of junk? Your kids need to feel that way, too. Help them children clean out their backpacks, put together homework folders, set up files for returned tests and school work.

6. Speak to the teacher. Teachers are constantly amazed when I tell them that parents complain that homework is ruining their lives, that it causes fights every night, that their children are starting to **** school. “Really?” they say, mortified. Believe it or not, most teachers are not out to ruin lives and make kids **** school! Many times, they have no idea what is happening. Please, please, please, speak to your child’s teacher! If your daughter is spending two hours a night doing homework that should take 30 minutes- the teacher needs to know. And, don’t believe that your child is the only one not “cutting the mustard.” You’ll be doing everybody a favor.

I have a list of Homework Questions to Ask the Teacher (see site information below). Ask them at Back to School Night- or any time during the school year.

7. Create a homework friendly home. Ask yourself, “If I were a kid, could I do homework at our house?” Is your home too noisy, too messy, too dark? Do you have a good dictionary- and can anyone find it? Making your home homework friendly does not have to be an expensive or time-consuming- but it does require some thought and effort.

8. Don’t hover or, worse, do your child’s homework. It blows my mind when parents tell me that they sit next to their children while they do their homework. (Okay, maybe I understand doing it for the first week of two of kindergarten, but after that? Stop it!) Your children work independently at school, and they can do it at home. And, stop doing their homework for them. If it is too difficult, speak to the teacher or get them some outside (tutoring) help.

9. Make your kids go to bed! They need sleep more than another page of math problems, trust me. And, if you don’t trust me, there are plenty of sleep studies to back me up. Forget the fact there are a myriad of physical, social, psychological and developmental reasons why kids needs the proper amount of sleep; chronically sleep-deprived students can’t learn. So, it is okay if your child stays up late once in awhile working on a project, but it should be a very rare occurrence.

Here’s a No Homework Note you can write to your child’s teacher explaining why you chose to make your child go to bed. Which brings me to my last tip…

10. They are your kids, and you are in charge. I am not suggesting that you begin second-guessing, questioning and criticizing your child’s teacher (please, don’t!). I am saying that if your child is struggling night after night with homework, if they are crying and fighting about doing homework, if your once rabid reader never picks up a book- put your foot down! Do something!

Start with these tips- and share them with other parents!

Homework Organization for Students (and Their Parents)

May 2nd, 2009
homework
Angela Norton Tyler asked:

I spend a lot of time at my seminars and workshops, on the phone and via email discussing the subject of homework organization. Actually, I spend a lot of time listening to parents complain that their children’s homework disorganization is driving everybody crazy!

Many students have such a hard time getting it together that by the time they finally sit down to do their homework, they are exhausted. No wonder they don’t want to do it! Getting organized will help alleviate exhaustion, bad attitudes, procrastination and rebelliousness.

Homework organization just makes life easier for everyone.

These are the homework organization tips that I use as a student, teacher and parent. Print this list and read it with your children. Then, post it on the fridge and refer to it often so that everybody (parents, kids, babysitters, grandparents) will be on the same organized page.

At School:

Write down every, single homework assignment in one place. I strongly recommend using a bound or wire notebook- definitely NOT a loose leaf binder. I don’t care how careful you are, pages will fall out, and then what? You won’t know what to do nor when to do it! A plain notebook is fine, but a datebook or calendar is the best. Some schools even provide these to students. Use it.

Write down homework assignments as you get them. This is mostly for older students that change classes and teachers, but it is a good habit for everyone. If the teacher says, “Oh, tonight I want you to read Chapter 4,” write that down in your notebook.

Write down every, single due date for a project or paper- even if you have a handout or syllabus. Handouts disappear (I think they hang out with loose socks), but you will still know what to do and when to do it if you have everything written down in your homework notebook.

Keep ALL of the day’s homework assignments together in one place. Don’t have a special place or page for math, another for writing, etc. You want to see everything in one spot.

Check your homework notebook Three (3) Times A Day:

1. Before you leave school (or each class), double check to make certain that you have everything (books, paper, materials, etc.) that you will need later.

At Home:

2. Before you start doing your homework, look at your notebook and make sure that you are doing the right assignment, the right page, etc.

3. Before you put everything away, take one more quick look. Did you do everything? Good!

Make a decision about where you will put your completed homework: into a binder pocket, a special homework folder, etc. You may decide to have a color-coded folder for each class. If you choose to use folders, I strongly recommend using 3-hole punched folders and keeping them together in a 3-ring binder. Whatever you choose, stick to it! Don’t put your homework in your a binder today, a folder tomorrow… And, never, ever fold your homework into a book or throw it loose into your backpack! Shudder!

Use your Magic Homework Box. You do have one, don’t you? The Magic Homework Box is a box with all of the homework supplies and materials a student needs on a regular basis. These supplies only come out of the Magic Homework Box during homework time, so you always have what you need. Now, that’s magic!

Clean up as soon as you are finished with your homework. Now, not later! Put completed pages in your homework folder, then put the folder and homework notebook in your backpack. Not only will mornings will be less crazy, you won’t have to sit in class knowing that you did your homework and forgot it at home (doh!). Don’t forget to put away the dictionary and any other books you may have used.

Remember to put everything back into your Magic Homework Box. In my house, homework is not “done” until everything is cleaned up and put away.

Keep your backpack organized. Throw away all of those candy wrappers and random pieces of paper. Keep one area or pocket filled with a few items (pencils, a sharpener, maybe a calculator) so that you can do your homework anywhere- maybe even before you get home!

Remove any graded test, project, report or paper that your teacher has taken the time to return to you. Why? You might need it to study for a test, for a portfolio or for a project. You can throw everything away at the end of the semester or the school year, but until then put each item in its own subject file, but NOT in the homework folder. Remember, homework folders are ONLY for completed homework that is ready to be turned in!

Don’t give up! They say it takes 21 days to form a good habit. If you forget to do something on this list, don’t stop trying. Hey, maybe if you remember to write down all of your homework or clean up for 21 days in a row, your mom or dad will do something extra nice for you! (Parents, that was a hint!)

A Note to Parents about Homework Organization

Please remember that your job is to give your children organizational tools and show them how to use them. Your job is NOT to organize your child’s homework! So, in the beginning, you might check your son’s homework notebook to make sure that he is writing down all of his assignments in one place, but you would never dream of calling the teacher and checking. You might watch as your daughter copies the science project due dates into her homework notebook; you will not do it for her.

Yes, I know that it is hard to let go- I’ve been there! But, we want our children to be organized and independent learners, right?

You can do it!

Disabled Aids in Shopping Centres

March 31st, 2009
shopping centre
Maria Keller asked:

Disabled facilities in shopping centres in the UK have improved significantly and with the introduction of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) in 1996, Part III effective since 1999 service providers must make ‘reasonable adjustments’ for disabled people.

The aim of the disability act being to promote inclusive environments that can be used by everyone regardless of gender, disability or age.

Most shopping centres in the UK are now accessible and offer a range of disabled facilities. Obviously it is in the interests of the shopping centre to be as accessible as possible on order to attract more and more people through its doors as well as competing with Internet shopping. Shopping centres also want to allow people with a disability, access to the entire shopping centre to enable everyone to enjoy the range of shops and services on offer.

Many shopping centres have convenient parking with easy access to entrances, and automated doors to assist with getting in and out of the centre. Most large centres will have well signed dedicated disabled parking bays usually positioned as near to the centre as possible. Doors with opening controls at wheel chair height make it even easier for wheel chair users to access a building.

Anyone who has limited mobility can get around the shopping centre by using a wheelchair or scooter. Again many of the larger shopping centres take part in the Shopmobility scheme by making wheelchairs available to their shoppers. This free service provides manual and powered wheelchairs and scooters to aid people with limited mobility to shop and make full use of the shopping facilities in a town or city. Children’s pushchairs are also free to loan under the scheme.

It is also important to note that companies are spending a lot of money on making ‘reasonable adjustments’ to their facilities including areas such as the toilets. As well as making the centre more accessible, toilets should also be conveniently located and accessible for people with mobility impairments. Ideally accessible toilet facilities for disabled people should be dedicated, unisex, allow left/right transfer for the wheelchair user and have an adjustable changing table complete with power hoist. They should also be conveniently located throughout the shopping centre and be fitted with an emergency alarm.

Shopping centres in the UK have successfully promoted a more accessible built environment and improvement of facilities for disabled people by following good practice measures. This makes it both easier for disabled people to get around and as their needs are catered for it makes it easier to enjoy a day out.

Shopping centres in the UK also have to take into considerations shoppers with sensory impairments. For customers who are partially sighted the centre will often provide a larger print version of the shopping guide and map from the Customer Services Information Desk.

Hearing loop induction systems are also provided for customers using hearing aids.

When choosing a shopping centre to visit most shopping centres in the UK will have facilities in place for a disabled shopper. Before planning a shopping trip you may need to check online to see exactly what facilities they offer, alternatively give the customer services team a call, as they will usually be happy to help.

5 Dirty Little Secrets a Health Club Won’t Share

March 24th, 2009
health club
Zach Hunt asked:

So you decided to do something about your fitness level. Naturally you think the first thing to do is join a big chain health club or gym. That’s a great idea if you know what you’re getting into. Think about these 5 following areas before you decide about which place you should join.

It’s a great idea - yes - if you use it.

However, here are 5 key things you need to think about before you step foot into any gym or health club.

1. “We don’t care care if you show up at our health club”

The sad fact is, the January rush ends in a cash surge for the big Health Clubs and the same amount of members as there were in the previous December.

Fitness goals and resolutions often just end up in long-term contracts and no-results.

That’s exactly what the clubs expect of you. To drop your resolution and never show up, but still paying the bills for the 1-2 year contract you signed up for.

2. “Our trainers don’t know what they’re doing”

Chances are once you get a membership to a health club an in-house personal trainer will try and sell you on their expertise.

Spokane health club trainers need no accredited certification to be out there on the floor flexing their guns. $50 and a 10-min online quiz can get you a certificate and title that sounds snazzy, but they aren’t worthwhile.

Look for quality personal trainers that can guarantee results.

3. “We want you to pay forever for our health club”

If you think getting started on a fitness plan is tough, try quitting your health club. Trying to get out of long-term contracts with gyms is one of the top concerns among gym goers.

The big health clubs out to get your money and keep getting it, month after month. They want you to keep paying, but stay home. After all it doesn’t do the health clubs any good if you come into their gym.

Which in turn doesn’t do you any good if your just paying for a gym membership

4. “Your stuff isn’t safe at our health clubs”

Think your belongings are safe in a big health club? Think again?

A recent report explained how a group of burglars stealing credit cards from lockers of health club members. You can’t be sure who is lurking around the health club locker room while your working out.

Now you can’t even bring anything with you to the gym. You’ll just have to carry your keys in your back pocket while you workout in any health clubs.

5. “Sales is our #1 health club goal”

When they offer you a sales appointment at their health club, what should you do?

While that offer sounds enticing, fast-talking and slicked sales reps will ensure you leave with more than just more information and insight, but a brand new long-term contract you can’t refuse.

Don’t worry about the small details in the contract, it’ll just apply to your contract anyway. One such website of a large health club promised a 30-day free trial membership. But the catch, if you don’t show up at least 12 times, you’ll be locked into a multiyear membership.

You can’t rely on the health club sales person, you must be on the defense and know what really matters when you looking for a quality Spokane fitness solution

Don’t fall for the health clubs Spokane gimmicks, go for a quality personal trainer that guarantees results, no matter what condition you’re in right now.

Is your Health Club Healthy or Insurance Companies?

March 21st, 2009
health club
Smith & Chen asked:

More and more insurance companies are offering discounts on health and fitness club memberships in the Dallas and Houston areas and throughout Texas, so it may be a good time to join a health club to stay in shape and continue to improve upon your overall health. But be careful. If your health club cuts corners when it comes to safety, sanitation and staff training, you may actually be jeopardizing your health by working out there. Now that you know that you should keep your eyes open, heres what you should expect from a health club:

1. Instruction on the courteous use of equipment and facilities.

When you join a health club, somebody from the club’s staff should ask you to load out a health history questionnaire. If you have a deep health problem (e.g., a heart term or a bad back), the club should demand that you attain medical clearance before first an exercise program. You should also be invited to a new appendage orientation meeting, which is commonly a one-on-one meeting to learn club system and how to courteously use the exercise equipment. workers appendages should also work with you to design an exercise program that meets your desires, charming into account any health evils or physical limitations you might have.

2. workers appendages who examine your fitness when you inception an exercise program.

workers appendages should curb on you periodically after your primary consultation. Even after youve been there for a few months, they should be willingly liveing to answer questions and tutor you courteous exercise techniques. This is feasible only if theres an adequate instructor-to-appendage ratio. If there are only a few staff appendages on task, they may not be able to give you the personal mind you should to exercise carefully.

3. authorized and well-skilled staff appendages.

All staff appendages should know about health and fitness issues and should be skilled in CPR and first aid. In addition, exercise instructors should be skilled by a nationally or internationally recognized organization such as the exercises and Fitness Association of America or the American College of Sports Medicine.

4. Equipment and facilities are good and anodyne to use.

repress out the term of the equipment and the goodliness of the facility. Even still state and/or regional governments must authorize health clubs, theres a ability they may not be directly regulated. However, they may be skilled by a national organization, such as the International Health, Racquet and Sports Club Association (www.ihrsa.org), which demands appendages to uphold good, anodyne facilities and adhere to a firm code of ethics. So muted cubbyhole quarters and shattered equipment can sometimes indicate that the club is in pecuniary bother, especially if the term inside the club has freshly full a jaunt for the inferior. These are cipher that your health club is adequately upholded:

* The club should have scheduled sanitation procedures.

* Members should be instructed to good off equipment after use. So look for adequate paper towels and spray bottles of disinfectant.

* The facility should be big enough to accommodate appendages, even during summit periods. Find out if the club limits appendageships to keep crowding to a smallest.

* Exercise equipment should be relatively new, not outdated.

* All equipment should be good and in good mend. shabby or torn equipment may be a anodynety hazard.

* Instructions for use should be friendly to each zombie.

* Mats and terrazzo should be good and tough enough to safeguard against injury.

* Showers and cubbyhole quarters should look and smell good, with absolutely no cast or mold obvious.

* The pool and hot tub should be hygienic smoothly. symbols of inadequate sanitation involve pool water that burns your eyes or foam in the hot tub.

* system of use should be dispatched in the pool or hot tub theme.

* First aid kits should be well stocked and willingly accessible to both staff and appendages.

5. Adequate safety in and around the club.

Health clubs regularly dispatch cipher advice appendages not to bequeath swag in their cubbyholes. Because cubbyholes are notoriously painless to jimmy open, paltry thieves regularly intention them. This doesn’t necessarily mean that the health club has lax safety, but it does mean that you should find out if the health club is departing the very mile to safeguard you and your posmeetings. decide if your club has:

* defense trial in place to guarantee that only appendages or their guests can write or bequeath the structure, such as appendageship cards, surveillance cameras or gates.

* Well-lit parking themes.

* defense guards, if the theme is especially dodgy.

* A well-attended child-care facility, if the health club offers childcare.

If you detect that your health club is not as good or anodyne as it should be, ***** to the club’s leader. If your concerns aren’t resolved or if deep health violations live, call the regional or state authority responsible for monitoring business or hygienic practices in your theme, such as Texas Attorney General’s workforce or your citys Health Department.

Child Minding Facilities in Shopping Centres

February 27th, 2009
shopping centre
Maria Keller asked:

Ever been to a shopping centre and had a toddler screaming because they are completely bored…. Or how about squeezing into a changing room with two toddlers with sticky fingers wiping them on the beautiful silk dress that you haven’t even tried on yet?? More and more shopping centres in the UK are offering crèche facilities for parents who would like a little light relief while running around the shops. The shopping centres themselves recognise that you’re more likely to spend longer in the shops and hopefully make them more revenue if you know your children are safe and having fun close by.

If you are not sure what to look for in a crèche there are a number of guides which will help you decide. They should have had an ofsted report which will help you see officially the standard of the children’s facilities. Don’t forget you can always go along and have a thorough look around before you decide.

The ofsted inspection is designed to assure government, parents and the public of the quality of the childcare provided. They measure and make comment on a number of aspects of the crèche facilities including the location, the effectiveness of the provision of childcare, protection of children from harm or neglect, and helping them to stay safe. They also cover educational requirements, and measure the provision for helping children achieve well, and enjoy what they do and make a positive contribution.

They should have a main play area, many with state of the art stimulating environments with ball pools, soft play areas toys and games. Art and craft activities are usually on offer, which help to keep the children happy, and give them a reminder of the day they have had. You may even find some play stations, dance mats and DVD’s in some of the larger centres.

If you are looking for a party venue then the shopping centre crèche could be a viable option. Some offer exclusive use of a particular children themed room, with decorative party thrones, party hats and invitations, place mats, serviettes, plates and cups for the party food.

While the children are having fun at the crèche, you can visit some of the department stores or shops within the shopping centre. Most centres have at least 2 department stores, and a number of select shops from the main high street shops such as Next, Boots and Monsoon, as well as some unique boutique shops.

Alternatively to help you keep an eye out on your kids whilst shopping, shopping centres may offer a range of free facilities buggies and parent and baby facilities including baby changing facilities which will you pre-dominantly find in the washroom facilities of restaurants.

So whatever you are looking for from wedding presents, or the children’s birthday presents you can nip around the shopping centre, and get back to the car to stash the gifts while the children are safe and happily playing with friends.

Discount Personal Checks

December 13th, 2008

The best place to buy personal checks is the Internet where
discounts in business transactions are the norm. While ordering checks
online, it is essential to ensure that the bank concerned is affiliated
to or accepts checks from the online agency giving them out. This is
because there are websites that dupe customers by delivering fake
checks.

Ordering in bulk quantities of 100-120 checks per book is
one way of getting discounts on personal checks. Discounts on personal
checks are useful for people running small-scale or home businesses.
Certain websites are willing to offer prices rebates of up to 50% for
personal checks. It is imperative to check references on the companies
that make such logic defying claims before placing orders with them.
However, there are many genuine companies that offer high discounts on
personal checks, typically they have a large stock of designer checks
that have gone out of fashion or have been produced in surplus
quantities. Ultimately, discounts are a matter of vigilance and
research.

Returned Checks and Returned Check Faqs - What Does Nsf Stand For? What is Stop Payment, Uncollected Funds, What Does Rtm Stand For?

November 24th, 2008
checks
Roger Powers asked:

Returned Check - Returned Check Reasons:

Why was my check returned?

Why was the deposit returned?

What does NSF stand for? What does RTM mean?

What do returned check messages mean?

Overview:

The U.S. Department of the Treasury has published the updated Check 21 Return Codes. Find out the reason codes, reasons for return, and reasons for rejection, and what the stamps actually mean.

Description:

Not Sufficient Funds - Not Sufficient Funds, NSF, Insufficient Funds, ISF are the same message. NSF and ISF mean that at the time the check was presented to the account holder’s bank, there were not enough funds in the account to pay the check or draft.

When a check is returned for NSF or ISF, the item can be redeposited unless the front of the item is stamped DO NOT REDEPOSIT.  Usually if an item is stamped DO NOT REDEPOSIT, the account number is also crossed out or punched out with a hole punch.

Uncollected Funds Hold - Uncollected Funds - UCF - UFH - UF, items are returned because funds available in the account are not yet available.  This can happen when a deposit into the account holder’s bank has not yet  cleared.  For example, the account holder deposits a paycheck for $1,000 into his bank on Monday, and the check is set to be clear on Wednesday, making $1,000 pending, but not available.  The account holder then writes a check on Monday night to a merchant that deposits the item on Tuesday. The merchant’s bank presents the check on Tuesday and the bank returns the item, Uncollected Funds, because the money is there on paper, but not available. If a check has been stamped Uncollected Funds Hold, Uncollected Funds, or a similar message, the item is eligible for redeposit.  Just deposit the item again, and the hold may have been lifted.

Stop Payment - Stop Pay - Check Stop - Stop Payment Check - Stop Payment Item - If your check or draft is returned with a Stop Payment this means the account holder, the person who originally wrote the check or authorized the draft has revoked their authorization.  You cannot redeposit an item marked with a Stop Payment.  Stop Payment is a feature available to any account holder who contacts their bank BEFORE the check or draft they authorized is presented for payment.  The account holder tells the bank the check number, the amount of the check and payee and the bank in turn looks for this check, or range of checks and returns the item(s) unpaid marked Stop Payment.

Closed Account - Account Closed - When the banks stamps Account Closed or puts the Closed Account stamp on a check or draft that was deposited, this means the account holder’s bank account that was associated with that check is closed.  No closed account or account closed items can be redeposited. You must get a new check from the  account holder when the item was returned Account Closed.

Unable to Locate Account - UTL - Unable to Locate - When a check or draft is returned with the Unable to Locate or UTL stamp, this means the bank cannot find any account with that account number in its records. This is most likely a check by phone or check draft where the wrong information was entered or provided.  Unable to locate checks or drafts may have details as to what exactly was wrong, such as a circled account number, or invalid routing number message.  Some UTL or unable to locate account checks have handwritten notes on the stamp to help the merchant locate the proper details. Users of CheckWriter software can use RoutingTool to look up bank routing numbers and bank phone numbers.  Other reasons could be the addition or absence of leading zeros in an account number, such as a customer with the account number 123456, but on the check the account number shows 000123456.  Unable to locate checks cannot be redeposited. A new item must be created or a new check would be required from the account holder.

Frozen Account - Blocked Account - Checks and drafts are returned with Frozen Account or Blocked Account messages when the bank is required to lock or Freeze an account.  This can be due to a divorce judgment, IRS tax lien, wage garnishment, court order or other legal reason that the bank can be required to freeze an account. Checks stamped Frozen Account cannot be redeposited - a new item is required from the account holder.

Stale Dated - Expired Check - Stale Check - Checks returned with a Stale Dated stamp are past the expiration date as set by the check issuer.  Some checks are valid only if cashed or deposited within 7 days, 30 days, 90 days or 180 days.  Checks with this time limit will be returned for Stale Dated or Expired Check and cannot be redeposited.

Post Dated - Post Dated Check - If a check is returned for Post Dated this means the date on the check was for a future date.  Future dated checks can be returned for Post Dated or Post Dated Check.  Checks that are returned and stamped Post Dated can be redeposited on or after, but not before the date in the date blank at the top right of the check.  Also check by the endorsement for wording such as “check not valid until.”

Endorsement Missing - Endorsement - If a check or check draft is returned due to endorsement missing, this is because the depositor, not the account holder that issued the check, did not endorse the item.  An endorsement is a signature or stamp that goes on the back of the check. At minimum, banks require a single signature in the endorsement blank on the reverse of the check. Other endorsements include, “For Deposit Only”, and “Without Recourse”, and “Pay to the order of” if making a third part endorsement. You can redeposit a check with Endorsement Missing stamped on it by adding an endorsement and redepositing the item.

Endorsement Irregular - Irregular Endorsement - Checks can be returned for irregular endorsement when there is a problem with the endorsement such as a signature mis-match, account number problem or if the endorsement cannot be read.  Checks can also be returned for irregular endorsement if the endorsement goes below the like that says, “Do not endorse or write below this line.”

Signature (s) Missing - Missing signature or signature missing returns are common where the signature on a check is not present.  Some checks can be returned for signature missing when two signatures are required to write a check on a particular account and only one signature appears on the check. A check with signature missing cannot be redeposited until the signature is gathered.

Signature (s) Irregular - Irregular signature or signature irregular returns are caused by a signature that does not match the account holder, or if the signature appears damaged, altered or otherwise obscured.  Signature Irregular checks cannot be redeposited. A new item must be obtained from the maker of the check.

Non Cash Item - NCI - A check returned stamped Non Cash Item, Not Cash Item, NCI or Not for Cash is usually an invalid check, like a rebate coupon, promotional check, or gift certificate that is deposited in error as a real check.  Items stamped NCI, Not Cash Item or Non Cash Item cannot be redeposited.

Altered Item / Fictitious Item - A check returned stamped Altered, or stamped Fictitious item does not match the account holder’s records or the bank’s records as far as the amount, date or terms of the check and is being returned in dispute of its validity.  This can be something as simple as someone writing a check for $125.99 and then changing the 5 in 125 to a 6 to make the check $126.50.  Any alteration can void the check at the discursion of the bank.  A cross out, alteration or change should be initialed by the account holder, but does not always stop returns, especially with high dollar items.  This stamp, Altered Item, or Fictitious item can also come with forged money orders, forged cashier’s checks, and forged traveler’s checks.

Item Exceeded Dollar Limit - Checks are returned with this stamp, Item Exceeded Dollar Limit when an account holder has a cap on the maximum daily amount the account can pass in a day, or if there is a maximum check value for the account.  Checks returned with this stamp cannot be redeposited.

Not Authorized - Unauthorized, Not Authorized, and UA stamps are typically a result of the account holder disputing the item during the payment presentment process, or if a particular block is noted on the account such as “no drafts” or “no debits” and such an item is presented.  Items marked Not Authorized or Unauthorized cannot be redeposited. In some cases an original item may be required rather than a draft created by check by phone software.

Refer to Maker - RTM - Checks returned with the RTM stamp require the depositor to contact the maker of the check. Refer to maker means, you should contact the person that wrote the check to find out why the item was returned.  If the maker does not know why the item was returned, the maker should contact their own bank for the reason. The merchant cannot obtain the reason for return from the maker’s bank, only the maker can get this information.  Items stamped RTM or stamped Refer to Maker cannot be redeposited. A new item is required.

What next:

If you have a check or draft returned, pay close attention to the reason code so you know if you can redeposit the item.

Protection:

The Advantages of Incorporation in the Isle of Man

November 18th, 2008
isle of man
Jelena Trumpa asked:

Every country and every jurisdiction has its distinctive forms of business. The Isle of Man is no exception. It is one of the most highly regarded offshore and international finance centres because of the exemplary record of cooperation it holds, because of the superior investor protection schemes it keeps in place and because the calibre of the international and offshore institutions allowed to operate from the Isle of Man is exceptionally high.

The Isle of Man’s zero rate of corporate tax came into force on 6 April 2006. The island’s progressive and commercially minded government has taken this bold initiative partly to satisfy the OECD’s harmful tax competition initiative. Of course, to fall into the zero tax category companies have to be correctly structured. To complement the Isle of Man’s zero tax policy and present an unbeatable corporate package to attract international business the new ‘Manx corporate vehicle’ has been proposed. Following these intentions, on 1 November 2006 the Isle of Man Companies Act 2006 came into force and has promoted significant and far reaching changes to company law. As of this date the island has become the most competitive jurisdiction in Europe for the formation and operation of international business companies.

The Isle of Man Companies Act 2006 is also known in the industry as the New Manx Vehicle or NMV. The new act has been designed to sit alongside the Island’s existing company law rather than replace it, but it allows to make it easier to set up and run a businesses in the Isle of Man. In particular, the significant simplifications mean:

• companies can be incorporated far more quickly;

• there is far greater flexibility of use by moving many obligations from statute into the articles of a company;

• corporate directors are allowed;

• both single member and protected cell companies are permitted;

• registered agents can take the place of company secretaries;

• no authorised or issued share capital requirements;

• no par value shares are permitted;

• no public filing of accounts;

• no audit requirements;

• no requirements for annual general meetings;

• reporting requirements and merger of consolidation procedures are simplified;

• reduced compulsory filings with the Companies Registry;

• companies can easily redomicile to or from the Island.

Each 2006 Act company is allocated a number followed by the suffix “V” to distinguish the new-style companies from the more traditional companies which may still be incorporated under the Companies Acts 1931-2004. Most companies already in place in the Isle of Man which were incorporated under the previously operational Isle of Man Company Legislation can now convert to become IBCs governed by the rules of the New Manx Vehicle. As predicted, more and more companies will be seeking to change because the new legislation is just so conducive to the smooth and simplified running of an IBC.

It is no accident that in modern times business organisations established in the Isle of Man have become so widely used internationally. It is arguable that the Isle of Man has the most sophisticated law relating to forms of business organisation of any centre for offshore work, and is among the leading jurisdictions of the world in this respect. The part of the success of the Isle of Man is its professional services industry with all the major international firms. Furthermore, the Isle of Man has adopted all internationally agreed measures and plays an active part in combating money-laundering and other criminal activities. Its financial services industry is long established and well regulated. Finally, the jurisdiction has worked hard to support this industry initiative and to launch the new vehicle. For all that, it makes absolute sense that national structures will do all they can to hone island’s internationally positive reputation and to enhance the benefits of doing business, banking and investing in the Isle of Man.
