| My two-year-old DSH Rex we recently adopted loves to be petted most of the time, and rubs... November 10, 2008 00:00:00How fun! Every cat is unique. I have heard of other cats that like to have their tail gently stroked and tugged. Not all cats enjoy tummy rubs, although they may roll on the ground and seem to ask for that. Rolling generally is a solicitation of attention, and not necessarily a tummy rub. But it takes a very confident and trusting cat to accept tummy rubs. Your Rex sounds like a normal, very affectionate kitty. Enjoy! - [Read more] |
| My son and daughter-in-law have just adopted two Siamese cats from a rescue organization... November 10, 2008 00:00:00Certainly they can be renamed. Cats are quite flexible. How many of our kitties answer to several names, such as Sheba (formal), Cuddlekins (nickname), and the generic “Kitty?” It can be helpful to choose a name that the cats actually respond to, so test out some of your favorites. Perhaps an abbreviation of the existing name, especially if they’re already responding to that old moniker. For instance, instead of Tabitha she might respond to Tabby. - [Read more] |
| How do I keep my cat from being so codependent on me? She just won’t leave me alone. Her... November 10, 2008 00:00:00Most of the questions I get ask the exact opposite—how can I get my cat to be more touchy-feely and spend time with me? Isn’t it interesting how we humans never seem to be satisfied, and the cats must really laugh at us!
If you want her to pester you less, simply ignore her overtures. If you give her attention when she asks, you’ve rewarded the behavior. And if you ignore her for quite a while and THEN give in, she’ll learn that the longer she pesters, the better chance you’ll give her attention. That teaches her to never give up. So, you’ll need to practice some tough kitty love, offer attention only on your schedule, but create a schedule that she can anticipate. - [Read more] |
| My cat Boba is just about to turn a year old. He is cuddly and affectionate, but for the... November 10, 2008 00:00:00Oh, he’s really got you trained! My best guess is he’s doing this for attention. And when you’re reading or sleeping, you’re not paying attention to him, so even spraying with water or a startling noise is better than being ignored. How much do you play with him in the evening? Do you have a routine that’s established—that you play/pay attention to him for about the same time each evening? Having him know when to expect interaction can help.
He’s at the age when play activity and even interaction may reduce. So it may fade over time. Meanwhile, you can make the forbidden high spots less attractive using double-sided tape products like Sticky Paws. Cats hate touching this kind of surface so you can put some on placemats and position them on the shelves or other surfaces you want the cat to avoid. You’ll also want to provide “legal” elevations for Boba to climb and lounge, like a cat tree—or maybe the TV if you can ensure it’s a safe place where he can’t reach breakables.
You’re doing the right thing rewarding the “good” behavior. About the only way to extinguish the “bad” behavior is to ignore it, so Boba realizes he doesn’t get attention for this behavior. That’s not possible if he’s breaking stuff at night, though, so putting him in the bathroom probably is your best bet. Simply invest in some earplugs so you can’t hear him rattling the door. - [Read more] |
| I know this is a little silly but Im starting to become sort of concerned. I have a cat... November 10, 2008 00:00:00It is normal for a cat’s personality to evolve as he or she matures. Kittens tend to be most interested in toys, and that interest usually fades after about a year of age. Different cats may become more or less “clingy” and that can be influenced by the presence or absence of other cats/people, and even by the weather. Since Louie no longer has Nefi to play with, he may be lonely and seeking extra attention from you. He may also feel concerned or stressed by her absence, especially if he hears her now and then. - [Read more] |
